Irish breeds of dog ranged from terriers and setters, hounds, and spaniels – with all three having origins on the Emerald Isle. Irish working dogs were originally developed for specific tasks to assist people. Today these native Irish hunting dog varieties fall under three American Kennel Club groups: Terrier, Sporting and Hound; some remain working while others serve more as pets than assistance animals.
