Due to breeding, color or medical reasons, certain dogs are more prone to tear stains around their eyes than others. While this condition is generally harmless and painless for pets and owners, some may be dissatisfied with its teary look; tear stain removers may help manage this staining problem.
Dr. Alejandro Caos of Denver-based in-home vet service The Vets suggests that tear stains in dogs may be caused by genetics, anatomy, medical conditions and grooming habits – all factors to be taken into consideration for successful dog eyecare.
Some breeds with short snouts or flat faces – like pugs, Shih Tzus, and bulldogs–are more prone to tears due to shallow eye sockets and extra skin around their eyes. Medical conditions like allergies, infections or blocked tear ducts may further exacerbate staining issues.
Caos told The Spruce Pets that “the color of a dog’s fur can also impact its visibility of tear stains, with lighter-colored dogs often showing more notable staining.” Additionally, Caos mentioned how type of hair a dog had may play a part in tear stain formation as those with long or thick locks near their eyes may more susceptible to tears building up in these areas and staining its coat – something Caos noted furthermore as they may accumulate and stain it over time.”
